Description:

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Vanessa" will be performed at Glyndebourne Live! Vanessa, a noblewoman, her young niece Erica, and Vanessa's elderly mother. They are visited by a young man named Anatole, the son of Vanessa's former lover Anatole, who shares the same name and looks exactly the same. Anatole lives in Vanessa and Erica's house and psychologically torments them with seduction and betrayal. Erika, driven to the extreme, is left in great loneliness. The story is beautifully constructed as a large mirror, symbolized by the mirror that serves as an important metaphor. Barber composed "Vanessa" from a libretto by Menotti, with whom he had a personal partnership, and it was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1958. The score, with its high tone and tension, and the tense psychological drama reminiscent of Hitchcock's thrillers, which were at the height of their popularity at the time, were highly acclaimed in the United States, and the opera won the Pulitzer Prize. However, from the time of its premiere to the present day, it has not been highly acclaimed in Europe. This Glyndebourne production by Keith Warner, known for his bold direction, combines a period setting reminiscent of old America without the eccentricities, with an all-over use of mirrors and glass, combined with effective use of projection mapping, to create an innovative psychological portrait of the characters in the play. The production was a great success, with enthusiastic performances by the principal cast, including Emma Bell in the title role and Virginie Velez as Erica, and the sharp stick of Yakub Fulsha, who is closely related to Warner.
