The original idea for the "Mozarabic Suite" heard here in Canizares' multiple recordings was a concerto for guitar and orchestra that was commissioned by the Cordoba Guitar Festival and premiered in 2021. Boabdil (Muhammad XII) surrendered the Alhambra Palace in Granada (Note 2), his last stronghold, to the Catholic kings Isabel I and Fernando II, bringing an end to Islamic rule and the Catholic movement to restore the land. In the ancient city of Cordoba, where the "Mozarabic Suite" was first performed in concerto form, the mosques (Islamic temples) left behind after the departure of the Islamic dynasty were converted into Catholic churches, and today one can still see a fusion of Islamic and Catholic styles in the architecture and culture.The reason why Spanish culture itself, as represented by flamenco, is so different from that of other European and South American countries, and why it continues to evoke nostalgia in us Easterners, is probably because of its special historical background. This album, which is not only full of beautiful and familiar melodies with fresh surprises scattered throughout, but also brilliant music performed with his usual sharpness or even more so, foreshadows Canizares' further enriched activities as a composer/musician/performer fused together in the future. This album is a glorious musical performance of a composer/musician/performer. Every day, Canizares says he hopes to surpass yesterday's self, and every note is imbued with a directness and enthusiasm that fills the album with the magic of music that breaks free from its will and becomes reality. The album's exquisite mix and balance, achieved by Canizares' meticulous attention to detail in sound production, is also a major highlight of the album.
