Description:

Keyboardist Bill Lawrence, who has been a part of Snarky Puppy since its inception, has been a part of the band since its inception, and is the keyboardist for the UK's intelligent and cool sound & Cologne's famed big band WDR/Conductor, a three-time Bob Mintzer Grammy Award winner and 2017 Down Beat magazine's Readers Poll/Jazz Keyboardist Bill Lawrence of Snarky Puppy, winner of the Groups category, released "Flint" in 2014, followed by "Swift" in 2015, "Aftersun" and "Live at Union Chapel" in 2016, and this 2019 has already One work, "Cables", was released. He is a supremely creative solo artist whose sound combines his constant familiarity with jazz, his interest in the classical music he studied at university, and the electro music that has intrigued him in recent years. UK Jazz magazine said, "If jazz is going to continue to appeal to a new generation of fans, it needs an artist like Bill Lawrence. This work features Bill Lawrence performing with the WDR Big Band, a traditional big band based in Cologne. In addition to Lawrence, several keyboardists participate in Snarky Puppy. The band's sound is said to change color depending on the keyboardists who participate, and Lawrence's participation is said to bring a cool, future-jazz/post-classical element to the sound that only a UK-based artist can bring, and this album is no exception. Bob Mintzer, who directs WDR, has said, "Bill Lawrence's music is unlike anything I've ever done before with WDR. There is a film-like quality to it, a simplicity that appeals to a wider listener/audience," he said. With this in mind, he said he considered the mix of harmonies, melodies, and rhythms to add color and depth to the music. The words suggest a veteran arranger with meticulous nerves, and the result is a dramatic sound that comes to fruition with a POP and stylish feel. Starting with an opening that expands the sound, using a minimalist approach with a series of patterned parts, but also weaving in dramatic solos, there is a song featuring lyrical piano reminiscent of Ahmad Jamal's Poinciana, a POP tune inspired by a TV theme song, and a Moroccan theme song. There is a POP tune inspired by a TV theme song, and a final number inspired by Moroccan rhythms and featuring the tabla, for a total of 9 tracks. Bob Mintzer himself arranged most of the songs, but some of the arrangements, such as the one with Snarky Puppy's Michael League, were well-chosen. The WDR is a permanent broadcast big band, and the techniques and solos of the 18 artists who make up the ensemble are powerful. This is a remarkable work.
