Shore was recorded before and during quarantine in Hudson (NY), Paris, Los Angeles, Long Island City, and New York City from September 2018 to September 2020, with the help of recording and production engineer Beatriz Artola. The 15-song, 55-minute "Shore" was initially inspired by frontman Robin Pecknold's musical heroes, Arthur Russell, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, and others who, in his experience, have celebrated life in the face of death. "'Shore' looks at the waves of Whitman's poem about death as a safe place on the edge of something uncertain," he said, "driven by a sense of adventure into the unknown, but also enjoying the comfort of the stable ground beneath me." That was the mindset I found and the fuel for this album." Pecknold commented.
