A contemporary “Lute Song” based on the Nag Hammadi manuscripts! Bernhard Lang’s (b. 1957) series *Hermetica*, which explores themes of religion and spirituality. The ninth work in the series, *Vox Angelica II*, is a monumental piece centered on the female voice. The text is drawn from the “Nag Hammadi Manuscripts,” a collection of apocryphal texts discovered in Egypt in 1945, and the intense tension between the sacred and the profane found therein serves as the driving force behind the music. Composed of four contrasting movements, the work interweaves fragments from the sensually charged “Song of Songs” in the Bible, echoes of Palestrina, and even samples from pornographic films—all transformed and layered through electronic sound techniques such as sampling and granular synthesis. Els Mondelars’ mezzo-soprano embodies both angel and devil, while the Nadar Ensemble’s instruments and electronics depict a conflict and tension that remains unresolved until the final movement.
