Description:
The viola has long played the role of a clamp or a fringe player in orchestral and chamber music. In recent years, the viola has increasingly been given the opportunity to play a leading role in solo or viola-only ensembles in spectacular fashion. One of these young top runners who has established a reputation is the German Nils Menkemeyer, born in 1979, who studied viola with Harioch Schlichty at the Munich State University of Music, and began performing while still a student there. He has won the Primrose Viola Competition and the German Music Competition. Yuri Bashmet, one of the best viola players of our time, and Gerhard Schulz, the second violinist of the Alban Berg Quartet, also highly acclaimed him, and Sony Classical has consistently released new recordings that show his commitment one by one. J.S. Bach played violin and viola, so I think he also tried the Suite for Unaccompanied Cello on the viola," Menkemeyer said.Bach: Suite for Solo Cello No. 1-3 (viola version)," released in 2014, was a performance that fully utilized the characteristics of the viola while also incorporating elements of period instrument technique by replacing the strings with gut and partially employing a baroque bow. This new recording is a sequel to the first one, but this time the arrangement is more baroque in technique and musical interpretation, with the lute or theorbo taking the bass part, and the deep tone and warm, friendly voice characteristic of Menkemeyer make the viola sound as beautiful as a viol. The beautiful sound of the theorbo is heard. The unaccompanied lute suite No. 3 (2) was arranged by Bach from the unaccompanied cello suite No. 5 (3), which is basically the same music, but Menkemeyer plays the former with theorbo and the latter without theorbo, and he also plays the Prelude from the lute suite No. 3 and the Cello Suite No. 5 without theorbo. In addition, Menkemeyer arranges the movements of the Prelude from Lute Suite No. 3 to the Prelude from Cello Suite No. 5, as if to contrast them. This original and unprecedented programming is truly a testament to the genius of Menkemeyer. Sony Music
