Launched in 2016, this Vaughan Williams series by master conductor Andrew Manze and the prestigious Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) quickly established itself as one of the definitive symphony collections of the 21st century. Following the completion of the five-volume symphony collection, a collection of orchestral works—including “The Lark Ascending” and “Fantasia on a Theme by Tallis”—was released. Now, a new collection of orchestral works centered on the masked drama *Job* and themed around dance music is being released. Composed after being inspired by William Blake’s illustrations for the Book of Job, *Job* was a work RVW attempted—unsuccessfully—to have Diaghilev adapt into a ballet; it subsequently became established as a concert piece. The story of Job is depicted in nine sections, characterized by dramatic contrasts such as the powerful and solemn music of God and the dissonant music of Satan. The program is rounded out by the richly colorful orchestral ballet music “Old King Cole,” which includes beautiful passages for solo violin, and “Running Set,” based on traditional dance tunes.
