Samuel Adler was born in 1928 in Germany to Jewish musical parents. 1939 he fled to the U.S., where he studied composition with Copland, Hindemith, and Randall Thompson, He has taught at Juilliard, the Eastman School of Music, and universities around the world for more than 60 years, and has become one of the leading American composers of our time. This album is packed with the religious works and hymns he has written over the years and his compositional history. Adler fled Nazi Germany at the age of 10, and on the night of November 9, 1938, violence against Jews erupted: over 250 synagogues were burned in two days and Jewish-owned stores were destroyed. The night is known as "Kristallnacht" because of the shattered glass windows of the stores that littered the streets. On that tragic night, the Adler family's lives were saved by a pipe organ that accidentally came crashing down.Thanks to this, they were able to escape from their pursuers and the family was able to escape Germany on the last train. The many religious works that emerged from this dramatic experience have reached the hearts of many people. In particular, "To Speak to Our Time," the title of the album, for a cappella chorus and two violins, can be said to symbolize Adler's music. The work was commissioned by the Dresden Chamber Choir for the 80th anniversary memorial concert of "Kristallnacht" and premiered on November 10, 2018, conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann.
