Series", a joint project between the Pentatone label and Canada's Oxingale Records label. The album, entitled "Overture to Bach," consists of a commissioned work by Haimowitz and Bach's unaccompanied cello suites, with Glass, Yoon Do, Iyer, Sierra, Sanford, and Woolf taking inspiration from the prelude to each of the six cello suites by Bach and composing an overture for each piece. The renowned contemporary composers each have their own individuality, yet a single universe unfolds through all 12 pieces. This is a brilliant work that expresses Haimovitz's unique world view.Cellist Matt Haimovitz, born in Israel in 1970, made his sensational recording debut in 1988 for Deutsche Grammophon with Levine conducting and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Since then, in 1999, he has been performing on his own label, Oxingale Records, in a truly diverse program that ranges from baroque to contemporary, as well as jazz and rock, transcending genre boundaries."
