Description:

The RCO Commemorates the 500th Anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch's Death with a World Premiere of a Requiem Commissioned by Detlef Granat Hieronymus Bosch is a unique figure in early Netherlandish painting. On the 500th anniversary of his death in 2016, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra commissioned Detlef Granath, composer-in-residence, to perform the work. Requiem for Hieronymus Bosch for soloists, chorus, organ, and orchestra premiered on November 5, 2016 at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Detlef Granath studied composition with Hans Werner Henze at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Cologne, where he presented his first opera at the Munich Biennale, a contemporary music festival founded by Henze in 1988, and has since become one of the leading contemporary German opera composers. His style is characterized by lyrical music that reimagines Romantic and Classical music anew from a contemporary perspective; he was the resident composer of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 2011 to 2017, where he presented his works. Granato composed in a style that corresponds to Boss's paintings and texts, combining the liturgical text of the regular Requiem with the manuscript of the Carmina Burana. And in keeping with Boss's early masterpiece, "The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Ends," each piece of the Requiem is accompanied by a poem on one of the seven deadly sins. King International
