A new sonic landscape of Brahms revealed through period instruments. A collection of cello sonatas performed on Andriani’s 1781 Galliano cello and two Erard pianos (1844 model and 1890 model) masterfully played by Sorrazzo. A collection of Brahms’s cello sonatas performed by the duo of Alessandro Andriani (cello) and Mario Sorrato (piano), who explore repertoire from the Baroque era through the 19th century on period instruments. Following their previous Beethoven recording using a fortepiano, this album features two different Erard grand pianos (period instruments) to match the respective eras in which Brahms’s two sonatas were composed. Combined with the renowned Galliano cello played by Andriani, this approach achieves a unique transparency—a balance of storm-like intensity and clear resonance—that is difficult to attain with modern instruments, as well as an extremely flexible approach to phrasing and dynamics.
