The Carolina Chocolate Drops embody the history of traditional American music and bring it to the present day. This anniversary edition celebrates the 15th anniversary of their debut album, "Genuine Negro Jig," which won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. The Carolina Chocolate Drops have a unique musical style that incorporates elements of hip-hop and soul into a traditional string band sound with heavy use of fiddle, banjo, jug and kazoo.Formed by Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robbins, who met at the 2005 Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, North Carolina, the trio, all of whom are members of the last generation of Southern black string band traditions They learned the musical traditions of banjo and fiddle from the Piedmont region under the tutelage of Joe Thompson, one of the last of the musicians to carry on the tradition. Old Southern string music is often associated with white musicians from Appalachia, Giddens noted in an interview with NPR. "There are two things that are missing from the history books. One is the fact that string band music existed in the Piedmont region.
