July and August 1957 were a leisurely time for the Philharmonia Orchestra. The members enjoyed their holidays and relished their freedom. However, by the end of August, they were once again focused on music, and just two days after rehearsals in London, they set off for Edinburgh on August 27 to perform three concerts in three days under three different conductors. The recording of Martinů’s Piano Concerto included here is from the European premiere of the work. The pianist, Filkschny, was a friend of Martinů’s and the premiere performer of his Second, Third, and this Fourth Piano Concertos. The Fourth had its world premiere in New York in October 1956, followed by its European premiere the following year, in 1957. Kubelik defected from Czechoslovakia to the West in September 1948, and in the early years of his career, he made numerous recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra for the HMV label. When his contract with EMI expired in 1952, he signed with DECCA and began recording intensively with the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1957, he was in the midst of recording his complete Brahms symphonies, so he actually rarely appeared with the Philharmonia Orchestra at that time. Nevertheless, this performance is incredibly passionate. After all, Dvořák and Martinů were composers of great importance to Kubelik, and he often performed with Filkschny. There is no doubt that the fact this program begins with Dvořák’s “Symphonic Variations” was more than enough to ignite Kubelik’s Czech spirit. [Comment provided by Universal IMS]
