Description:
Since his sudden death on July 29, 1970, Barbirolli’s discography has expanded considerably. We are now able to examine the details of his discography and broadcast recordings more thoroughly than ever before. Over a period of 27 years, beginning in 1937, he left behind a vast collection of broadcast recordings for the BBC and Continental radio. These recordings document his guest appearances with the Hallé Orchestra and other orchestras, but at the time, they were not known as part of his commercial discography. The two Sibelius symphonies featured here are among those recordings; of the Second and Fifth, the Second is a 1962 studio recording, marking his first recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Fifth is a live recording from the 1968 Henleywood Promenade Concert. Sibelius held a particularly important place in Barbirolli’s repertoire, and he actively included the composer’s symphonies in his concert programs from a young age. In 1940, he performed Symphony No. 2 numerous times in Chicago and New York, and after becoming music director of the Hallé Orchestra, he performed all seven symphonies in chronological order. He even included Symphony No. 7 in his first concert with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra in 1961; it can be said that he walked hand in hand with Sibelius throughout his career.
