Description:
The first collection of orchestral works by Leiviska, Finland's first important female composer! Performed by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra led by Stasevska! Daria Stasevska (1984-), a native of Ukraine, studied violin and composition at the Tampere Conservatory, violin and viola at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and conducting under Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam. In 2023, he received the "BBC Music Magazine" Personality of the Year Award. The new album is her second recording as principal conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, following the Rautavaara and Martineau piano concertos with Olli Mustonen (BIS SA-2532). This is the first album in a series of recordings of orchestral works by Finland's first important female composer, Helvi Leiviska. Leiviska was born in Helsinki in 1902 and studied piano and composition with Erkki Melartin and Artur Vilner. She composed orchestral, chamber, and instrumental music, songs, and music for film while working as a librarian at the Sibelius Academy at a time when the general public was still considered prejudiced against "women composers. The "Piano Concerto in D minor" and "Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major" session recordings (Hansler Classic HC-23050) were recently released, and have received increasing attention in recent years. The "Orchestral Suite No. 2" is a suite of four pieces from the score written by Finnish avant-garde and experimental filmmaker Nyrki Tapiovaara (1911-1940) for his 1937 film "Juha". The Coming of Spring, Umoresque, Lullaby, and Epilogue. The novel of the same name by Juhani Aho (1861-1921), on which the film is based, was also used as the basis for the opera by Are Merikanto and Levi Madetoya. The "Symphony No. 2" was composed in 1954, when Leiviska was moving away from the late Romantic style toward counterpoint polyphony and a more linear approach. The work is in three movements: the first, "Andantino quasi allegretto-piu animato e ritmico," the second, "Allegro molto," and the third, "Andante cantabile, It was premiered in Helsinki on April 5, 1955. The "Sinfonia Brevis" (Short Symphony) was composed in 1962 and revised in 1972. It is in a single movement, and its polyphonic and linear style leaves a lasting impression. It was first performed in a recording by the Helsinki Philharmonic conducted by Erick Kronvall, and has since been performed frequently on radio broadcasts. King International
