The warmth of the nyckelharpa. The Swedish nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) is a folk instrument with four strings, 12 resonant strings, and a keyboard. Although the instrument nearly fell into disuse in the middle of the 20th century, it has enjoyed a resurgence and is now being used by a younger generation of players in a variety of musical genres. Emilia Ampel (1981-) is one such musician. She grew up in Torsos in southeastern Sweden and began playing the nyckelharpa at the age of 10. She studied musicology and composition at the Norwegian University of Technology and Natural Sciences (NTNU) in Trondheim and folk music at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, the Sibelius Academy, the Southern Danish Academy of Music and Drama, and the Ole Bull Academy.In 2010, she was named International Nyckelharpa Champion and received a Grammy nomination for her Trondheim Soloists album "In the Tone of Folk Songs" (2L 068SABD), which includes her composition "Abrege (shortened)," a suite of folk songs for nickelharpa and string orchestra.
