John Chikai passed away on October 8, 2012, at the age of 76. In honor of his great achievement, two works released only on LP by Storyville have been coupled and released on CD for the first time as a 2-CD set. The first set couples "DARKTOWN HIGHLIGHTS," recorded March 15 and 29, 1977, and "PUT UP THE FIGHT," recorded November 10-14, 1987, both released under the name John Chikai & The Strange Brothers. Born in Denmark to a Congolese father, John Chikai began his career as a jazz musician in the 1950s before moving to New York City in 1962, where he worked with the New York Jazz Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic before moving to the U.S. in 1963. The body of work he participated in recording during that period would define his subsequent fame. He participated in the troubled "Ascension" in John Coltrane's last years and "New York Eye & Ear Control," one of the most famous recordings in the history of the ESP label, with Albert Isler, Don Cherry, and others. Chikai began to release albums under his own name in the late 1970s.At this time, he was already into hatha yoga and meditation, and the influence of these practices can be seen in the titles of the songs. This is a must-hear performance for all lovers of the aforementioned works. Ten years later, "Put Up the Fight," recorded in 1987, features a world-music approach, including Latin and African music, as well as synths and electrics. The pastoral melodies and funky arrangements create a peaceful sound, and the influence of the South African jazz scene can be heard.
