Description:
ETHAN DANIEL DAVIDSON, a Detroit-based singer-songwriter whose guitar and songs have crossed the line between Americana and folk for many years with 2015's DRAWNIGH, 2020's COME DOWN LONESOME and 2022's STRANGER. He has consistently sung about road life and religious motifs, and released "CORDELIA" on the same BLUE ARROW RECORDS label in May 2025. LEAR" is his 14th studio album, released in November 2025, and is a sister album from the same sessions as "CORDELIA" of the same year. Produced by DAVID KATZNELSON and LUTHER DICKINSON, the album features bassist BYRON HOUSE, who has also played with EMMYLOU HARRIS, and drummer MARCO GIOVINO, who has played with ROBERT PLANT and JOHN CALE's band, The band includes pedal steel virtuoso RAYFIELD RAY RAY HOLLOMAN. The songs focus on family relationships, aging, and dealing with psychological wounds, and also include a look at the outside world, such as "THE WORLD WE WANTED," which looks at climate change and social division. The rough acoustic guitar and pedal steel of "STOP BREAKING DOWN" also contains a small reference to JOHNNY CASH's "RING OF FIRE" and HANK WILLIAMS' "I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY," while "THE WORLD WE WANTED" is a quiet reflection on the heartbreak of his own past. I'M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY" by HANK WILLIAMS, while also quietly reexamining his own past hurts.COUNT THE KNIVES," a slow, soulful groove that reimagines a song formerly recorded for DRAWNIGH; "BAD COMPANY BROUGHT ME HERE," a wry portrait of middle-aged men and their sense of aging, supported by a tender band ensemble; and "HOW CAN ONE KEEP WARM? ALVIN YOUNGBLOOD HART's guitar lays down wistful phrases on "HOW CAN ONE KEEP WARM?"; DUANE BETTS guests on "NOT BREAKING HEARTS," a tribute to '60s country; RAYFIELD RAY RAY HOLLOMAN's steel on "WAITING FOR ME" creates a gospel-like uplift, and "THE WORLD WE WANTED" calmly sings about the climate crisis and political powerlessness. The somber feel of NEIL YOUNG's "ON THE BEACH," combined with a band sound that naturally blends elements of blues, country, and soul, makes for a quietly responsive work of Americana, even in the midst of a long career.
