Inspired by one of the themes of the January 2016 Brundibar Arts Festival, the first annual festival in the UK dedicated to Holocaust music and art, "Inspiring Women," this album features Jewish Dutch women composers who survived the Holocaust as the theme of the festival. Henriette Bosmans, born into a musical family in Amsterdam, is a composer and pianist. She performed with Pierre Montoux, Willem Mengelberg, and others, and played 22 piano concertos with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra between 1922 and 1949. This album includes two early works: the Violin Sonata, full of youthful passion and vitality, and the Piano Trio, a gift for his mother's birthday, in a romantic style that evokes Spanish passion, French Impressionism, and echoes of the Middle East. The cello sonata chosen for the coupling, a world premiere recording by Fania Ciapiro from Java, Indonesia (former Dutch East Indies), has Prokofiev's influence scattered throughout the work, with a strong jazz feel in the final part of the piece.Enjoy the performance by the Brundibar Ensemble, led by Alexandra Leifrina, who is the founder and artistic director of the Brundibar Arts Festival and a member of the Royal Northern Sinfonia.
