Soul-jazz superstar Gregory Porter's new album, his fifth studio album in a year since 2016's Take Me To The Alley, is a tribute to his childhood hero, Nat King Cole! Porter says, "Nat King Cole's music stuck with me when I was five or six years old. My father wasn't very interested in me or in raising me, so he wasn't very involved in my life. Nat's words were the life lesson, the sage advice, and the advice from my father that I needed. There is no doubt that Nat King Cole was the most influential person in Gregory's life. In fact, Gregory wrote an autobiographical musical of the same title, "Nat King Cole & Me," which was performed in 2004. After the musical," Gregory says, "my feelings for my father softened and my appreciation for my mother and Nat King Cole's wonderful music deepened. He says that writing his own songs helped him find his own voice. Writing the musical finally made me feel comfortable calling myself a songwriter. Before that, I had only written various poems, not music." The album was recorded at AIR Studios in London.Gregory's favorite Nat King Cole songs 'Smile,' 'L-O-V-E,' and 'Nature Boy' are included, as well as a version of Gregory's song 'When Love Was King,' which was originally featured on the million-selling album Liquid Spirit. Conducted and arranged by six-time Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza.
