Harmony with the Universe: Sophisticated Polyphony Woven by Voice and Brass Johannes Kepler (1571–1630), a great mathematician and astronomer, was deeply aware of the connection between music and the universe throughout his life. Having elucidated the movements of celestial bodies through mathematical theory, he was also a proponent of Pythagoras’s theory of “celestial music,” viewing music—crafted using the sophisticated counterpoint techniques of the time—as a higher-dimensional expression that reflected all the geometric aspects of celestial motion. Concerto Palatino presents a program themed around Kepler’s ideas, featuring selections from contemporary polyphonic music that harmonize with the cosmos. “Astron” by contemporary composer Kalliope Tzapakis—meaning “Toward the Stars”—is based on the ancient Greek Delphic hymns. By having a contemporary composer reinterpret the oldest surviving notated music, a harmony transcending time and space is born. While Concerto Palatino typically features a brass ensemble as its core, this album features a performance with the addition of a vocal ensemble featuring renowned singers such as Hana Brašiková. The performance is truly exquisite, with the warm sound created by Dicky’s cornet, trombone, and organ intertwining beautifully with the lovely vocal harmonies. King International
