What made Long John Baldry stand out among British R&B singers of the mid-1960s was the breadth and depth of his knowledge of the blues. He had been roaming the folk, jazz, and skiffle scene in Soho since 1955, but taught himself to play his first Redbury number on guitar at age 14. After working with such early British R&B greats as Alexis Korner, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, Davey Graham, and Cyril Davis, he became a frontman himself.
