Songs by African-American Composers by World-Renowned Rossini Tenor Lawrence Brownlee is the second most popular Rossini and Donizetti singing tenor after Juan Diego Florence. With a voice that can be described as robust, and a superb technique that soars to very high notes without the slightest stress, he has sung in opera houses around the world and has been acclaimed as "an international star in the bel canto opera repertoire" (The New York Times) and "one of the leading bel canto stars in the world" (The Guardian). Born in Ohio in 1972, he grew up without much exposure to classical music. He grew up without much exposure to classical music, but played trumpet, guitar, drums, and sang pop and church gospel music. He attended graduate school at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, where he sang Count Almaviva in Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" at the Virginia Opera to rave reviews in 2002 and made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2007. Since then, she has appeared at such prestigious opera houses as Vienna, Milan, Berlin, Madrid, Dresden, and Munich. On this album, he recorded songs by African-American composers. The past few years have been trying for both humanity as a whole and for African Americans here in the United States. But through all of these many challenges we have faced, we have also seen moments of strength, inspiration, hope, and great beauty. We have featured poems centered on themes of joy, empowerment, faith, love, and strength from some of the greatest artists of the Harlem Renaissance (the heyday of art, literature, music, culture, and the arts in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, circa 1919-1930), and have worked with some of today's most talented Working with some of today's most talented African-American composers, it is not only about our struggles, but also about our triumphs," said Brownlee.
