[Manoog Parikian (Violin) Philharmonia Orchestra [Recording] 29-30.IX & 1-2.X.1955 (1-12 Mono, 13-22 Stereo), Studio No. 1, Abbey Hall Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London Performer] Carlo Maria Giulini, conductor June 14, 2025,20th anniversary of the death of Carlo Maria Giulini Commemorative box with the latest remastered recordings from the original master tapes For the first time, all studio recordings by the master conductor Carlo Maria Giulini for Columbia and HMV (plus two recordings for Pathé and Electrola) have been high-resolution remastered from the original tapes and compiled in a 60-CD The box contains all previously unreleased and unreleased studio recordings. The box includes previously unreleased recordings: the overture to "The Magic Bullet" from 1969, stereo versions of "Spring" and "Summer" from Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," plus a rehearsal of "Winter" (1955), and a rehearsal excerpt from Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5" from excerpt from Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 5" (1962). * All 96kHz/24-bit remastered recordings prior to 2020 have also been newly remastered at 196kHz/24-bit, thus making them all available as 196kHz/24-bit remastered recordings. (Some of the sound sources have been remastered at 196 kHz/24-bit after 2020.) Natan Milshtein/Prokofiev: Violin Concerto", which was included in the previous box, is not included in this box because it is a U.S. Columbia:U.S. Capitol recording and the current rights are owned by Universal. The lyrics and bilingual translation are not included in this box. This collection is the result of Carlo Maria Giulini's collaboration with the prestigious London orchestras, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, whom he adored, and later, colored by mutual respect and affection, some of the greatest performances in the orchestra's history The recordings made during the legendary partnership with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and several collaborations with La Scala, the Royal Opera House, the Paris Conservatory Orchestral Society, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra are a comprehensive testimony to the orchestra's long and distinguished history. Respectful and deeply emotional interpretations of Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann; heavenly masterful performances of the 1959 "Don Giovanni" and "The Marriage of Figaro"; thrilling overtures by Verdi and Rossini; vivid and colorful Debussy, Ravel, and Falla, Stravinsky; iconic concerto performances with virtuosos Itzhak Perlman and Mstislav Rostropovich; majestic, intensely expressive interpretations of Berlioz, Bruckner, and Mahler...all this and much more makes this anthology absolutely indispensable testament to the art of one of the finest conductors of our time. Carlo Maria Giulini was a conductor par excellence, respected equally by orchestra members and soloists alike for his humility and sensitivity. As he said with legendary humility, "I don't want to say that I conducted them. Rather, I want to say that I created music with these great musicians, these human beings." As British critic and musicologist Tully Potter points out in the box's liner notes, "If there is a common denominator among the diverse performances in this box, it is perhaps Carlo Maria Giulini's unparalleled ability to bring a unique spiritual brilliance to orchestral and choral tone. He devoted himself unreservedly to the project. He gave so generously of himself that when he died in Brescia on June 14, 2005, at the age of 91, former chorus members and orchestra members felt as if they had lost a friend." Remy Louis, on the other hand, concludes his text in French. In many ways, Giulini left an indelible impression on his successors, who were distinctly different in character: Myung-Whun Chung, Simon Rattle, Yannick Nézet-Séguin. That in itself is an eloquent testament. Chung, another spiritualist, sees Giulini as a "sacred musician," and others even see him as St. Sebastian. So much so that it is painful to describe the beauty of the music. But in its many nuances and transformations, there is no doubt that everyone recognizes in this master's legacy what Walter Legg himself called the 'brilliant halo' emanating from Carlo Maria Giulini."
