Joseph-Guy Ropartz was a French composer of the same generation as Debussy and Pierné, but because he was born and raised in Brittany, his style is characterized by a distinct flair. Although he did not establish himself in Paris and thus did not achieve the recognition he deserved, his works—which evoke his native Brittany and the sea—have been receiving increasing attention in recent years. His two cello sonatas rank among the masterpieces of French cello sonata composition, alongside those of Debussy and Fauré. They are utterly satisfying, with the piano—on equal footing with the cello—depicting a majestic and passionate Romantic torrent. Pauline Bartisol is a virtuoso who studied under Rostropovich and Hat Bayerle; she served as a soloist with the France Radio Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007 to 2019 and has taught at the Paris Conservatory since 2013.
