Bernd Alois Zimmermann! Two symphonies premiered by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra! A live recording of two symphonies by B.A. Zimmermann, originally premiered by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra! The first draft of the “One-Movement Symphony” and the “Vocal Symphony,” a concert adaptation of the challenging opera *The Soldiers*! The 18th album released by the bastillemusique label features two symphonies by Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918–1970), a German composer of contemporary music known for his unique style and complex compositions! The performance is by the Cologne WDR Symphony Orchestra, which has deep ties to Zimmerman’s works, and was recorded during a rare live concert held on May 5, 2018. The first work, *Symphony in One Movement*, was originally commissioned by Northwest German Radio (NWDR) in Cologne. It was completed as a single-movement symphony for a large orchestra including various percussion instruments, harp, and organ, and was premiered in 1952 by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Hans Rossbau. However, this premiere was harshly criticized—in part for the perceived anachronism of including an organ—and Zimmerman, with Rossbaud’s assistance, undertook revisions that removed the organ and reworked the long, complex measures. This recording features the original first draft, prior to these revisions. The second “Vocal Symphony” is a concert piece that condenses the music from the opera *The Soldiers*—famous as one of the most challenging works in 20th-century opera—into a performance of approximately 40 minutes. This work was also premiered by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra; the music from Acts I and II, condensed into a six-part form, is performed by six singers and an orchestra. In addition to a 64-page bilingual booklet (English and German) featuring program notes and interviews, the release includes a leaflet containing photographs of the composer and the live performance, as well as handwritten materials.
