Turandot," Puccini's (1856-1924) last work, pursues a timeless form of love. It is a masterpiece that takes the universal themes of "love, death, fear and power" and colors them with beautiful melodies. The work incorporates many of the Oriental tastes popular at the time, and contrasts the two heroines, the overwhelmingly powerful Turandot and the dainty Liu, with the prince Calaf, who is at the mercy of a riddle to be solved. These three and the many people who surround them. All of them come together to form a magnificent climax. Puccini died just before the completion of the opera, but his will was passed on to the composer Franco Alfano, who is known to have created a magnificent final scene. The singers are also noteworthy.The cast is among the finest of our time, including star American soprano Lise Lindstrom (making her Royal Opera House debut) in a decisive title role, the excellent tenor Marco Berti in the superb Caraf, and the lovely Liu Nakamura by the Japanese Eri Nakamura, who is active mainly in Germany. The cast is superb, with some of the best cast members of our time. Andrej Servan's lavish production of this production, originally produced in 1984, is already a familiar face at the Royal Opera House and has long been a favorite of BBC Television's recordings of the production in the 1980s. This is the 15th revival of the recording, and it is truly remarkable how popular it has become.
