Description:
Around the turn of the 18th century, a special tradition emerged in the Italian Christmas concerto. This was the incorporation of a pastoral song (a pastorale in 6/8 or 12/8 time) depicting animals and shepherds watching over the infant as Jesus was born and laid in a manger; several concertos by Corelli are known, but other composers also wrote many works in this style. This album includes such a Christmas concerto. The performance by Concerto Copenhagen, led by leading Danish performer Mortensen, is beautiful, making full use of the serene sound. The Nordic Christmas celebration, where the performers are based, is said to have originated from the "Yule" festival held by the Vikings around the time of the winter solstice. People cooked food they had stored and burned large fires to appease evil spirits and celebrate the resurrection of the sun, but the joy of Christmas is universal. Naxos Japan
