Spyridon (Spiro) Samaras was a Greek composer active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His name was first recorded in history as the composer of the "Olympic Hymn" for the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896. Although it was performed only once and then forgotten, in 1958, when the 54th General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was held in Tokyo, a piano score by Samaras was found in Greece and arranged by Yuji Koseki for orchestra, which was performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Kazuo Yamada). This arrangement has since been recognized as the official "Olympic Anthem" and has been performed at ceremonies and other events. After studying in Athens, Samaras himself studied at the Conservatoire de Paris as a pupil of Massenet. After returning to Athens, he continued to compose operas and operettas, which were highly acclaimed. This opera, "Mademoiselle Belle-Ile," based on a play by Alexandre Dumas, is impressive for its romantic and refined melody.Since no complete score of the entire work has survived, conductor Fidetsis has painstakingly restored the entire work from the remaining sections and the piano score for this performance.
