Description:
The 21st volume of Sousa's highly popular "Works for Wind Band" series features three very rare works by the composer, who is known as the "King of Marches" having composed over 100 marches, but who also composed numerous operettas and suites that were highly acclaimed in the American theater at the time. The opening of the album is a piece from the 1880s, "The March King". The album opens with music from "Chris and the Wonder Lamp," a comedy premiered at the Hyperion Theatre in New Haven in 1899. The story is based on the famous Aladdin legend, and was so well received at its premiere that it was revived on January 1 of the following year at the Victoria Theatre on Broadway. The brass band version by M. Burton is used in this album. Sisterhood in America" is a ballet for a show at the Hippodrome Theatre in New York City (the predecessor of Radio City Music Hall), incorporating music representing the 48 contiguous states of the United States. Showing of Before Company was a piece frequently performed by Sousa in his matinee concerts. It is a delightful piece with clever devices. Naxos Japan
