This is a masterful performance in which each singer brings a distinct character to their role—the four fresh-faced young people, the shrewd Don Alfonso, and the enigmatic Despina—and Karajan’s spirited conducting is also superb. The aria collection conducted by Pritchard—who also served as music director of the Glyndebourne Festival—showcases Schwarzkopf’s charm in full force.
