Description:
[A collection of unknown cantatas by Marazzoli, the master of the Roman Baroque, performed by the masters of ancient music] Marco Marazzoli was a 17th century composer, harpist, and tenor singer who worked mainly in Rome in the service of Cardinal Antonio Barberini and Pope Alexander VII. Following the cardinal, he traveled throughout Europe, including Italian cities and Paris, composing operas, oratorios, and cantatas. Cantatas were Marazzoli's specialty, and they were popular not only in Italy but also in France. This recording focuses on cantatas for six voices, two violins, and bass continuo, and includes five of the seven surviving works in this form. The music is like a small opera, with solo voices, chorus, and instrumental ensembles. Despite their high reputation during his lifetime, Marazzoli's cantatas are not often neglected today. The reason for this is said to be that the extant autograph scores are often illegible. The autograph score in the Vatican archives has various difficulties for a contemporary performance score, including struck-out and rewritten sections, incorrect notes, illegible measures, indecipherable text, missing measures in the bass clef, and many others. The music focuses on polyphonic development and contains numerous dissonances not found in other music of the same period. In this recording, the dissonances are not modified, but accepted as musical effects. The theme of "La Vendemmia" is a grape harvest festival, and the main character is Bacchus, the god of wine. It is a "catalog song" of the wines drunk in 17th century Italy, with the characters praising their favorite Italian wines one after the other. La Zenobia" is based on the story of Radamisto and Zenobia from Tacitus' "Chronicles of Ancient Rome. The music by Marazzoli depicts the fierce fate of Radamist and Zenobia, who are hunted down by the Armenians. The word "Il Riposo" means "The Rest." Set on the shores of Lake Albano, where Castel Gandolfo, the retreat of Pope Alexander VII, whom Marazzoli served, is located, the characters' "rest" shows the Pope enjoying the tranquility of beautiful Lake Albano, away from the bustle and strife of Rome. The Pope's mediation of the war is symbolically described. The "Mortal, O ye who live in the dark night" commemorates the end of the French-Spanish War with the "Treaty of the Pyrenees," signed in November 1659. The treaty was mediated by Pope Alexander VII, and the lyrics include references to the Seine River in Paris and the Ebro River in Spain, symbolizing papal peace. (1/2) Naxos Japan
