Description:
Johann Franz Xaver Störkel, a composer, keyboardist, and priest who lived at the same time as Haydn and Mozart, was born in Würzburg in 1750 and was a court keyboardist under the archbishop of Mainz and a favorite at the court of Naples. There are numerous records of Störckel's many works in a variety of genres, and his performances at the "Concerts Spirituales" in Paris from 1777 to 1790 surpassed those of Haydn, who was extremely popular at the time, in terms of the number of symphonic works performed, but until recently, he was a forgotten figure. In the 21st century, the number of performances and recordings of Haydn's symphonies has been increasing as scores have gradually improved and the works have been reappraised. This recording is the second collection of Störkel's works on the cpo label, following the chamber works. Op. 11 is a collection of four symphonies composed in 1774 and published in 1782. Included here are two symphonies: No. 2 in C major, which opens with an intense opening theme characterized by a crescendoing, rising figure called "Mannheim Rocket" (Mannheim Fireworks), and No. 3 in E-flat major, with its impressive syncopation and leaps of sound. Op. 26 is a collection of three piano concertos published in 1786. The C major concerto recorded here is a masterpiece with a very beautiful and lyrical second movement. In this recording, the performer, Velikovich, has composed a technical cadenza for each of the three movements, each with its own theme. Velikovic, who has recorded piano music from the 18th to 19th centuries for the cpo label, is a veteran pianist from Serbia who was trained by such famous pianists as Paul Badura-Skoda, Rudolf Filkushny, and Nikita Magalov. He specializes in works by Austro-German composers from the Classical period to the 19th century, and has made numerous recordings for cpo. Johannes Maesz is a master of reviving masterpieces by composers buried in history, and has recorded many valuable works for the cpo label. In this recording, the two are close friends, and they play well together in a 4-4-3-2-1 string orchestra, 2 oboes, and 2 horns, conveying Störkel's charms to us. Cover Painting: Ferdinand Cobel (1740-1799) & Wilhelm Cobel (1766-1853), "Southern View of Lake Schönbusch with the Schönbusch Palace and Canal" *Ferdinand Cobel and his son Wilhelm Cobel were painters active in Mannheim, specializing in landscapes.
