[A look at the multifaceted nature of W. Mundy, a great master who witnessed the period of transformation of English church music. This is a collection of works by William Mundy, who was active in the middle of the 16th century, when English church music was shifting from Latin to English. After gaining practical experience in London, he joined the royal choir, where he worked for the rest of his life. During this period, he composed music for both English and Latin prayers as the situation demanded, through the introduction of English worship under Edward VII (1549-53), the revival of Latin worship with the return of Roman Catholicism by Mary I (1553-58), and finally the establishment of English worship in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. In this recording, Mandy composes a prayer in both languages. In this disc, Robert Quinney, who has worked extensively as an organist and choral conductor, has selected seven works, mostly in Latin, with the prestigious Oxford New College Choir of Boys & Adults a Capella, of which he has been music director since 2014.The solid sense of unity in the fine piece "Awake or asleep," the diverse vocal expressions in the over 20-minute-long "The voice of our Father in heaven," which develops from two simple voices to six, and the interplay of monophonic chant and polyphony in the early work "Kyrie," reminiscent of the earlier works of Fairfax and Taverner, all bring out the charm of each piece. The interpretation of each work is well drawn out, and the audience can enjoy the multifaceted nature of Mandy's music. Naxos Japan
