American pianist and writer Zimon Barthes has enjoyed a long-standing friendship with Eschenbach since 1989. Previously, the CAPROCCIO label has released albums featuring Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto (C5065) and Brahms' Piano Concerto (C5210). Barthes here does not take the "percussive approach to the piano" that is common in Bartók's playing, but rather he believes that a supple touch is necessary, and he takes a relaxed tempo to make the melody sing with elongation. Normally, these three pieces would fit on one CD, but due to the playing time of over 87 minutes, they have been released on a 2-CD set. Naxos Japan
