This is the second album in which Kellen Gray, an African-American conductor from South Carolina, draws with deep empathy on the works of his country's forebears with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, of which he is assistant conductor. The Montgomery Variations, based on the gospel song "I Want Jesus to Walk with Me" by Margaret Bonds, who is also known for her association with the poet Langston Hughes, and incorporating jazz idioms, is her only remaining purely orchestral work. Each of the seven movements is tied to an event of the Civil Rights Movement and is dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Concerto for Orchestra by Ulysses Kaye, recognized by William Grant Still and taught by Paul Hindemith, is a neoclassical work characterized by the contrast of sections (strings, woodwind, and brass) rather than the solo playing of each instrument.Named after the English composer of African descent Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Coleridge-Taylor Parkinson is also known for his film and pop music.
