Oleg Meissenberg was born in Odessa (now Odesa, Ukraine) in 1945 during the Soviet era and studied at the Gnesin Music School in Moscow. he won second prize at the International Schubert Competition in Vienna in 1967 and the "Music of the 20th Century" competition held there the same year. After performing in the Soviet Union, he moved to Vienna in 1981. Since then, he has been a trusted pianist not only as a soloist but also as a pianist, especially for chamber music and songs, for the best performers. Perhaps for this reason, Meissenberg has made very few solo recordings, and although Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasy" was released on ORFEO in 1982, Grieg's piano concerto is the first time it has been released in authorized repertoire. There are also very few recordings of Grieg's piano concerto from the 21st century, so this 2004 Grieg recording is also valuable in that respect.
