The Raft of the Medusa (Medieuze)" is one of the masterpieces by Theodore Gericault, a painter active in the first half of the 19th century. 1816, the theme of this huge painting of a horrific maritime accident that actually occurred in 1816 stimulated the imagination of many artists as a sign of the rise of Romanticism in French painting. The painting was also inspired by Henze's work. Henze was also inspired by the painting, and in 1967 he wrote a large-scale oratorio for two soloists, a narrator, a large chorus, and an orchestra, using a libretto by Ernst Schnabel. However, when he attempted to premiere the work in Hamburg the following year, the performance was cancelled due to a brawl caused by people who were opposed to the radical direction of the work. This album contains a live concert performance of the work on the 50th anniversary of its composition, featuring two soloists, Wegener and Henschel, as well as the narrator, Bechtloff, who directed "The Ring" at the Vienna State Opera and the Da Ponte trilogy at the Salzburg Festival, and Arnold Schoenberg, who directed "The Ring" at the Vienna State Opera.
