Andrea Chenier" was composed by Giordano to a libretto by Luigi Illica based on the real-life poet Andre Marie Chenier, who was executed on the decapitation table during the French Revolution. The story of Chenier and Maddalena, from their first meeting to the tragic ending, is dramatically unfolded with Giordano's rich musical accompaniment.This is the fourth collaboration at the Bavarian State Opera between Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Halteros, the two stars of "Andrea Chenier" (2017), following "Lohengrin" (2009), "Don Carlo" (2012) and "Il Trovatore" (2013). The two singers, who are gaining popularity as the golden duo of the moment, are superb in their superb singing and breath-touching duets. Marco Armiliato, a master of Italian opera who has conducted at the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera and is in great demand around the world, eloquently depicts the love-hate relationship between a man and a woman and the tragedy of the French Revolution under the baton of Philippe Stölzl's magnificent stage design.
