The second recording of Löwe's little-known life's work, the oratorio! Karl Löwe established a new style of "ballad" in German song. In fact, he was a religious musician by profession, and served as cantor at a church in Szczecin (now Szczecin, Poland) from 1820 to 1866. It is estimated that more than 17 oratorios were written during his tenure, but their study and performance have lagged behind, overshadowed by the success of the "Ballade. Thomas Gropper, the conductor of this album, is passionate about their revival, and his second work, following the Passion Oratorio "The Sacrifice of the New Testament" (OC1706) recorded in 2018, dramatizes the latter half of Hus, a pioneer of the Reformation and a spiritual pillar of the Bohemian nation. The work was premiered in Berlin in December 1841, but was subsequently buried, only to be revived in 2013 in a version with piano accompaniment, the first recording of the orchestral version.The orchestra is based on the instruments and size of the period, and the singers include Monika Mauff and Dominik Werner, all of whom are first-rate singers in the field of ancient music. Gropper has written an extensive 9-page commentary (in English and German) in the booklet. Some works from the Czech Republic, such as Dvorak's "The Hussites" and Smetana's "Tabor," the fifth piece from "Our Fatherland," were influenced by Jan Hus's way of life. It is interesting to listen to this oratorio as a pioneer of these works in Germany. Naxos Japan
