Gardiner's Monteverdi in a magnificent box set. Special price! In 2017, on the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi's birth, Gardiner launched a major project entitled "Monteverdi 450," a performance tour that took him to 16 cities around the world from April to October 2017. Among them, nine cities-Bristol, Venice, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Lucerne, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, and New York-where he performed three Monteverdi operas in ticles. Gardiner, who made this performance tour possible, is now widely known for his performances of Bach and Beethoven, but Monteverdi is his original composer, and the English Baroque Soloists, formerly named the Monteverdi Orchestra, is his original orchestra. This box contains three works, "Orfeo," "The Return of Ulisse," and "The Crowning of Poppea," recorded from the second cycle performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the city associated with Monteverdi, as part of that tour. In "Orfeo," the hero laments the death of his beloved wife Eurydice and departs for Hades, and the story unfolds with Christian Adam, who has attracted attention as a baroque singer mainly for works by Handel and Haydn, and Hana Vlasikova, who is well known in Japan for her guest performances at the BCJ.In "Ulisse," the story of the hero who wanders through foreign lands at the mercy of the gods on his way home to his wife Penelope, Julio Zanazi, who played Apollo in the previous production of "Orfeo," sings the title role, Lucille Ricciardo, who made her presence felt as the messenger, plays Penelope, and Hana Blaskova, who sang Eurydice, plays Minerva. Hana Bruskova, who sang Euridice, took the role of Minerva. Hana Vlaskova, who sang the role of Euridice, also has an overwhelming presence in the role of Minerva. The "Crowning of Poppea," said to be the first opera in history to be based on history rather than mythology or the Bible, is a masterpiece from the last years of Monteverdi's career. It is known as a work with a high degree of freedom for performers, as only the songs and bass parts are written in the two surviving manuscripts.
