Rachmaninov, Sergei (1873-1943)

Description:

Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra recorded Rachmaninoff's complete orchestral works for Vox from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s, including symphonies and piano concertos as well as the choral symphony "Bells" and the cantata "Spring". The newly remastered coupling of Symphony No. 2 and Vocalise is available on Vox. Symphony No. 2 is a masterful recording that was nominated for two Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Orchestral Recording and Best Recording Technique. When the recording was first released in Japan, "Record Geijutsu" magazine commented, "The orchestra is well-balanced, and the smooth melody of Rachmaninoff is sung with a breathtakingly natural rubato" (Tadao Koishi, reviewer of the performance). The orchestra develops in a spacious soundstage. The depth and resolution are high, yet the whole is well integrated. The sound is supple and lustrous, the localization of the parts is clear, and there is no distortion or muddiness" (Shohachiro Aizawa's review of the recording). Slatkin re-recorded the Second Symphony with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra 30 years later. The second recording, on the other hand, is a neatly sculpted and carefully detailed performance that conveys a sincere and passionate desire to convey the true value of the piece at a time when it was not yet a standard piece of music.Enjoy a sound refreshed by the latest remastering. This is one of the VOX AUDIOPHILE EDITION discs produced by Elite Recordings and remastered at 24bit/192kHz.
