Georg Christoph Wagenseil was an Austrian composer. Although his works are rarely heard today, he was highly popular in 18th century Vienna and is known for his achievements in training numerous pupils. The seven pieces featured on this album are selected from a collection of 17 trio sonatas for flauto traverso (horizontal flute), violin, and basso continuo, all of which are world premiere recordings. All seven sonatas are written in the then customary three-movement "fast-slow-fast" style, but although the form is the same, the tuning, melody, rhythm, tempo, harmony, and intensity of each piece are set arbitrarily, resulting in a wide variety of varied music.
