Description:
Alexei Lyubimov's Lockenhaus Live, Late Night John Cage! Before John Cage published his work with Chance Operation, he wrote "Four Walls" in 1944 for a Butoh play choreographed by Merce Cunningham. Although Cunningham reportedly requested that the piece be "easy to play," the piano was composed to be played using only the white keys, and only the ninth piece, "VII," features a solo soprano singing lyrics by Cunningham. The performance is by Alexei Lyubimov, a Cage specialist who has frequently performed this work in concert and in collaboration with dancers since 1992, and was recorded live at the 1994 Lockenhaus Festival, starting at midnight. The sound is both beautiful and stimulating, "anticipating the styles of Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt, and minimalism as a whole" (Lyubimov). It is a re-release of an album released on the Moscow label in 2002 and produced by Lyubimov himself. Naxos Japan
