Description:
Systematic works by the "Josquin of the secular world." Josquin Desprez, one of the finest polyphonic composers of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, enjoyed an enormous reputation. While his church music, the essence of polyphony, has been recorded in numerous recordings, secular songs, which were popular even during his lifetime and from which subsequent generations of composers wrote derivative works, have seldom been tackled on an album-by-album basis. This album by the Douce Mémoire, an antique music ensemble based in the ancient city of Tours in central France, is a substantial album that will quench that thirst. In addition to a cappella interpretations of standard works, the album also features solo singing with many voices on lute and harp, as well as instrumental arrangements from the same period and related works by their predecessors. The Renaissance wind players of the elite Syntagma Amici group also participate, adding color with their beautiful consort of shawms, bombardos, recorders, and other instruments that have an ancient and rustic flavor. The singers, including Mathieu Le Levreur from Le Poème Armonique and Polin Bundgen, who presides over a group specializing in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, sing with a warm yet clear voice, accentuating the flavor of each piece. The liner notes (in English, French, and German) by David Fallows, a world-renowned scholar of the music of this period, make this an unmissable recording of an important composer who continues to attract increasing attention even 500 years after his death.
