Description:

Medieval Islamic Spain. The Capella de Ministrellas is led by Carles Magranel, a bowed string player and musicologist based in the Valencia region of northeastern Spain, who has been combining research into ancient music with an insatiable spirit of inquiry and performance practice with unparalleled musicality. The theme of this album is "The Dove's Necklace," a great medieval Spanish Arabic work that will celebrate its 1000th anniversary in 2022. The Dove's Necklace" was written in rhyme by Ibn Hazm, an Islamic jurist and poet active in Cordoba, the capital of the Islamic dynasty (later Umayyad dynasty) that reigned on the Iberian Peninsula for several centuries after its establishment in the 8th century A.D. It deals with a wide range of themes related to love, and is an important reference work on medieval Islamic thought and customs. Although it is an important document that provides insight into medieval Islamic thought and customs, most of the manuscripts were lost due to the Christianization of the Iberian Peninsula and a succession of wars. The only manuscript that miraculously survived was brought to Europe via the Ottoman Empire, and has attracted attention in Western society since the 19th century. Based on the verses contained in the manuscript, McGraner has composed a program of 20 pieces, consisting of traditional Arabic-Andalusian tunes and improvisations, using medieval and traditional instruments. The colorful sounds of bowed strings and wind instruments such as the rebec and rebab, the oud, the medieval harp, the kanun, and the saz, and various percussion instruments, including the tombak, create a variety of rhythmic variations. The excellent recording, in which the direct sounds emerge clearly in a moderate reverberation, is another of the label's charms. Naxos Japan
