Description:

This is a collection of works by Hungarian-Austrian composer Jenay Takács (Takács Jenay). After studying composition with Joseph Marx at the University of Music in Vienna, counterpoint with Hans Gall, and musicology with Guido Ardler at the University of Vienna, she began a critically acclaimed concert tour as a pianist in Germany, Hungary, and Yugoslavia in 1920. After meeting Bartók in 1926, he produced a number of works in a cosmopolitan style, incorporating elements of his Hungarian roots into his compositions, as well as reflecting the musical influences of the Egyptians and Arabs he had visited. This album contains five works. Serenade" with its familiar melody, "Hungarian Melody," a rhapsody in which the violin sings a melancholy melody, "Piano Concerto," in which the orchestra, percussion, and piano compete in an intense performance reminiscent of Bartók, and the avant-garde "Piano Concerto," in which a rumbling low string melody undergoes various transformations. The "Passacaglia" has an avant-garde style with various transformations of the rumbling low string melody, and the "Three Pieces" are based on Celtic, Hungarian, and American folk songs, respectively, allowing the audience to enjoy Takács's wide range of compositional styles.
