Description:

From Basel, the sacred city of ancient music. The truth about the music that graced the stages of Shakespeare's time with violins and wind instruments. While music was enjoyed at private gatherings of royalty and nobility, it also played an important role on the stage where large numbers of people watched plays. The Concerto Sirocco, a group of talented musicians who studied at the Schola Cantorum Basel in Switzerland, a major center of ancient music research and education, has focused on masks (masked musical theater), a type of stage performance in England around 1600, and has performed a number of pieces that were performed there (and sometimes adapted as music for mask performances). The album is an album that vividly conveys the splendor of the stage performances of 400 years ago. It is noteworthy that the violin is used instead of the viol (gamba) that the aristocrats of the time enjoyed playing. It is clear from surviving paintings and other evidence that these instruments were already in common use in various settings in the intellectual world at that time, and one can enjoy a different flavor from that of the viol consort, along with the sounds of wind instruments such as recorders, woodwind cornet, and sackbutton (Renaissance trombone). The bass section also features small and large violones that refer to surviving instruments made in England and Italy around 1600, and is commented on in the liner notes (in English, French, and Italian) by baroque violinist-musicologist Peter Walls, whose research in this field has attracted worldwide attention since the late 20th century. The liner notes are in English, French, and Italian. This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the uncompromising results of uncompromising research by experts with outstanding musical skills, and to get a true picture of the stage music of the same period as Shakespeare's plays.
