Description:
Alphonse Szerbinski is an undiscovered composer of the Polish Late Romantic period. Born in Gostyn to a father who was a Superior Court Commissioner, he showed musical talent from an early age, writing his first piece at the age of seven. After graduating from the local gymnasium, he went to Berlin to study but nearly gave up music after two years due to lack of funds. He returned to Poland and worked as a music teacher before joining the priesthood to spread God's teachings, but died in a religious dispute. Many of his works were lost during World War I or burned at his own discretion, but thanks to the efforts of the composer's niece, Maria Szczerbinska, nearly 65 of them, including 13 in print, are extant. All of the works featured here by Koukl are world premiere recordings. Enjoy the elegance of these pieces, with their well-formed forms modeled after classical works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, and others, and their refined melodies reminiscent of Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Liszt.
