Description:

A collection of masterpieces from Spain, a treasure of medieval music! The "Cantigas of the Virgin Mary" is one of the most popular pieces of medieval music with its vivid interplay of sounds of various ancient instruments, yet there are surprisingly few easily accessible recordings of it in Japan. Alfonso X, who reigned as king of Castile, which later became one of the central pillars of the Kingdom of Spain at a time when many Muslim lords still lived in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, left his name in history as the "Wise King," as a king who was fluent in various languages and well versed in all aspects of culture. This is an important collection of over 400 songs by Alfonso X. The Capella de Ministrellas, based in Valencia, Spain, will perform this collection with a variety of instrumentation, which tells the story of the miracles of the Virgin Mary that devout Christians encountered in the 13th century, when the Notre Dame school of music and the troubadours of southern France were active. The music is performed by the Valencia-based Capella de Ministrellas with a variety of instruments. As many medieval music players do, there are also instrumental arrangements, and the fact that the majority of the tracks here are instrumental tracks in particular is a point where the fascination of medieval instrumental sounds can be appreciated. This is a piece that is unique to the label, with a raw sound that shines through careful engineering that makes use of direct sound, including bihuela, rebec, bowed viel (medieval fiddle), medieval harp, and various percussion instruments.
